The Nurburgring turns 90!

Updated: May 28, 2023

When you are married to a Racing fan, you learn about (and explore) race tracks around the world

In June of 1927, the Nordschleife track at Nurburgring opened and has enjoyed a reputation as a terrifying and merciless route through the Eifel forests. A Formula 1 world champion gave it the nickname – Green Hell. The track is one of the most demanding in the world with tricky corners, treacherous crests, steep inclines and gradients and constantly changing road surfaces which demand great skill from the driver and put vehicles to a hard test.

Unique thanks to its location at the heart of the Eifel region and its spectacular layout, the Nordschleife is not only the longest permanent race track in the world but also the most beautiful and notorious one. Gradients of up to 18 percent going up to “Hohe Acht” and slopes of up to 11 percent at the “Fuchsröhre” section further shape the character of this “first mountain, race and test track”.

Well, living with a race car fan means that when you decide your next trip is in Germany, one has to automatically book a car to drive this legendary track. Which we did...it was well worth it for just under 11 minutes on this track.

I was the passenger in this ride and we had a WASP dash cam hooked up (see the video below). The track is 20.832 km in length with 73 turns (33 left, 40 right). There were people outside several parts of the track watching the drivers and even a few sections had chalk drawings on the track! One section near the end was quite rough and you bounced around a lot!

If you don’t want to drive yourself, there is an option of being a passenger with a track race car driver!

It was quite the experience and for sure a highlight of the trip!
